We see all across the country women go to see a local plastic surgeon to inquire about the cost and effects of breast augmentation. The reason is obvious.
All across the United States we find ourselves in a place where the worth of a young woman is often portrayed in the way she looks. Self-esteem of young women is at an all time low. Plastic surgery and other artificial enhancements are at an all time high. There is a competition that is formed between how the world wants to view young ladies and how young ladies want to appear before the world. Specifically the surgical enhancement through breast augmentation has become one of the most common surgeries that a person can have. We see all across the country that both flat chested women as well as women who are normally endowed go to see a local plastic surgeon to inquire about the cost and effects of breast augmentation. The reason is obvious. They want to alter their appearance to look differently than they currently do and more like the world expects them to. The question I pose before you today is, do breast implants and similar bodily enhancements really increase the self-esteem of young women? I think that initially the answer would be yes. Just looking in the mirror a recent breast augmentation patient would be able to see a drastic difference in physical appearance. It is probably even quite likely that a female with larger breasts may find she attracts more attention from the opposite sex than she had before augmentation. A euphoric high would cause some to say, yes, I feel great now that I've changed who I was made to be into something else that makes me feel beautiful. Sure, that's a little harsh, but that's the way I view it. I can see a little further down the road when the newness of breast implants wears off and now a young girl is left being who she was all along. Maybe she meets a man who doesn't treat her like a lady should be treated and suddenly, breast implants or not, her low self esteem may return. Breast implants and other surgical enhancements may go a long way in improving self esteem for some women, but unless the foundation of their personality has been laid deep enough to where a women loves who she is, simply because that is who she is, then I think the man made satisfaction is a temporary condition rather than a solution to a nationwide epidemic.
