The person who suffers from panic attacks shouldn't attempt to "force" the panic attacks to stop, trying to convince themselves that the "panic" isn't real or that it's all "in your head" will only make the situation worse.

But just like you shouldn't focus solely on trying to imagine them away, you also shouldn't simply "give in" to the panic. When overcoming panic attacks isn't always easy, but it is by far the simplest route, rather than allowing yourself to become emotionally stunted by the effects of panic.

If you find yourself suffering from panic attacks, you should try to use various relaxation techniques until you find something that works for you. Deep breathing, meditation, visualization, and even simply regular exercise can really make a difference in overcoming panic attacks. When you take time out for yourself, you will find that you are far less likely to stress out or "panic."

If you do find yourself in a situation or place that appears to trigger your panic attacks, it is perfectly acceptable to not continue to subject yourself to the situation or place. If it's a place or situation that you absolutely cannot avoid, then take the steps to help prevent panic attacks when you are there. Remind yourself that you have an "out," visualize your "escape route" while in the place or situation, take deep breaths, and even take a "time-out" and leave the situation to take a "breather" if necessary.

There are many different medications and therapies out there that can be useful in overcoming panic attacks.

Many anti-anxiety medications have minimal side effects and can be taken with other medications, if you suffer from random, acute panic attacks- then it might be in your best interest to speak with your physician about the possible benefits of one of these medications.

Counseling and/or behavior therapy have also proven to be useful in overcoming panic attacks, so it's definitely worth looking into. Many insurance companies will cover these types of therapy, although it's best to consult your insurance company's policies about how much they will cover.

Overcoming panic attacks isn't easy, but it can be done. With time, you'll find that it gets easier to deal with as long as you simply don't give up.
