While it may seem to be a small part of that process, garage doors are nonetheless something you will likely need to concern yourself with over the course of owning a home, and it is not until you begin to learn a bit about them that you realize there is so much to learn. Granted, no one need become an expert to make some simple decisions, but it stands true that the more you know, the better chance you have of making the right decisions. As a start, here is an overview of the main types of garage doors available.

One of the most common types of garage doors are those that work on rollers. These work by rolling directly up and into the ceiling, making them the perfect solution for those who don’t have a lot of space to work with. Like most of the types, these can be hooked into an automatic opener, lessening the hassle for the average homeowner. Because they take up such a small amount of space when opening or closing, it allows the owner more freedom when it comes to parking their cars. This in turn can leave more room for other considerations. A lot of people like to make use of their space to put in tools and workshops for outdoor projects. Rollers allow you to do just that with a minimum of hassle.

Another common type is the overhead variety. With these garage doors, the mechanism swings them up and out before opening or closing them entirely. The main disadvantage to this type is that it requires a lot of room to really make them work. If you have a lot of space, they can work and work well. If you don’t have the necessary space, you should probably look at the roller variety. On the other hand, the overhead type is usually cheaper and sometimes they require a little less maintenance (though no system really requires a lot).
