As a pool owner,Summer Water Safety program by Swim Australia Articles nothing is more important than the safety and protection of your family and visitors in and around the water.

The following has been developed by Swim Australia’s SwimSAFER program to ensure you have a safer summer. It is all about providing ‘layers of protection’:

•    First and foremost is constant supervision by a responsible adult. For non-swimmers and children under 5, this means ‘within arm’s reach’.

•    The next layer of protection are barriers that meet government requirements. Pool fences and gates need to be regularly inspected and maintained. Objects like pot plants and chairs that can be used to climb fences need to be kept away.

•    Developing swimming and water safety skills provides another layer of protection. Enroll in classes at a Swim School registered with Swim Australia: www.swimaustralia.org.au. This is not a substitute for proper supervision and barriers though.

•    Have an emergency action plan. Missing child - check the pool first! Up-to-date resuscitation skills can make all the difference. A resuscitation poster should always be visible in the pool area.

Visit www.swimaustralia.org.au for information on CPR-Mate! At less than $25, every pool owning home should have one!
