In the case of forgiveness and abortion I feel there are perhaps three areas of forgiveness. There is forgiveness of yourself, forgiveness of the father of the aborted child and forgiveness by God.

At a glance it might appear that forgiveness by God is the easiest of the three, after all we are human and make mistakes and stumble our way through life, but on another level we may have somehow started living our life for fear that God may punish us because of the act of aborting our child. We may not think it consciously but there may be a guardedness, especially if you have other children or want to have more children later on. Tentatively expecting some kind of karmic payback.

In essence we are projecting our own harsh criticism of ourselves onto God and expecting God to punish us.

Perhaps you feel that if you suffer enough then you won't suffer the wrath of God.

God is Love though.

Self forgiveness might be the hardest of them all. We are our own harshest critics, and if you're a perfectionist then you may be doubly hard on yourself. With unrelenting standards.

But starting the process of forgiveness will release the energy that is drawing you to the memories of the abortion.

Letting yourself off the hook might leave you feeling exposed, and perhaps suffering if your way of staying guarded, controlling the self punishment.

So how do we forgive?

One of the easiest ways I've found to forgive is to do ho'oponopono. It's an ancient Hawaiian practise meaning reconciliation and forgiveness.

The essence of ho'oponoponpo is:

I'm sorry, please forgive me, I love you, Thank You.

It's a mantra we say over, meaning peace begins with us.

It has hugely calming and powerful effects, very transformative. It can be said with someone in mind or to yourself or you can just say it by itself with no one in mind.

So why not take the first step and forgive yourself?
