Embarking on a journey to Rome, a group of sailors from the Navy planned a day trip filled with historical sights and Italian culture. However, their lack of Italian language skills and a series of misadventures led to a day that was both chaotic and unforgettable. Despite the setbacks, the experience left an indelible mark on their memories, showcasing the importance of embracing the unexpected when traveling.

The Ill-Fated Itinerary to Italy's Capital

I have been serving in the Navy for nearly 12 years,A Whirlwind Adventure in Rome: A Sailor's Tale Articles and my travels have taken me to some of the most stunning destinations across the globe, including Portugal, Brazil, Peru, Croatia, Curacao, Spain, Hong Kong, and Cuba. Yet, one of the most captivating places I've had the pleasure to visit is Rome, Italy, with its rich history, breathtaking architecture, and delectable cuisine.

The Journey Begins

Our adventure started in the port of Naples, where six of us, eager to explore Rome, planned to catch an early train and return before midnight to our ship. We managed to leave the ship by 7 am, but our planning soon proved inadequate. At the train station, we faced our first obstacle: none of us spoke Italian. As we tried to decipher the train schedules on the monitors, we realized we had just four minutes to board our train. In a frantic rush, we were aided by a local who guided us to the correct platform, but as we boarded, the train began to move, leaving one of our group, Rook, behind.

A Split Decision

Seated on the train, we quickly devised a new plan. Two sailors would disembark at the next stop and return to Naples for Rook, while the rest of us continued to Rome. However, this plan also went awry.

The Roman Expedition

I was among the three who pressed on to Rome. Upon arrival, we waited for our companions, but after two hours, we ventured into the city on foot. Our decision to walk, in hindsight, may not have been the wisest, as it took us an hour to locate the Colosseum. By the time we arrived, it was nearly 5 pm, and we had squandered most of the day in transit. Despite our disappointment, we savored some delicious local cuisine in the shadow of the Colosseum and briefly explored the area before realizing we needed to head back.

The Fortunate Straggler

The following day, we reunited with Rook and learned that he had made the best decision of us all. He caught the next train to Rome, arriving shortly after we had left the terminal. While he didn't find us, he managed to explore Rome on his own before returning to Naples. Ironically, he had a more successful visit than the rest of us.

Reflections on Rome

Looking back, if I ever have the chance to visit Rome again, I would ensure I have at least a week to fully immerse myself in all the city has to offer. Despite the mishaps, the experience was extraordinary and has become a story I'll always cherish.

Thank you for reading my account of a crazy day in Rome.
