Pushkar is an ancient Hindu town situated near Ajmer in Rajasthan. Pushkar means born due to a flower. Hindus believe that the god released a swan with a lotus in its beak and let the lotus fall on earth where Brahma would perform a grand yagna. The place where the lotus fell was called Pushkar and became one of the five sacred dhams (pilgrimage sites Hindus). Pushkar is also known as "Tirth Raj" - the king of pilgrimage sites.
The date of origin of Holy Pushkar town is not known but as per legend Pushkar associated with Lord Brahma. It is said that Brahma performed penance here for 60,000 years to have a glimpse of Radha and Krishna.
Pushkar has many old temples out of many destroyed by Muslim invasions but were rebuilt later. The most famous Temple of Pushkar is Lord Brahma Temple – built in 14th Centuary which is said to the only temple in the World dedicated to Lord Brahma.
Pushkar is situated around the shore of Holy Pushkar Lake. It has five main temples and many small temples. Holy Pushkar lake has 52 ghats where pilgrims have holy dip in the sacred waters.
The Pushkar Fair (Pushkar Camel Fair) – Pushkar Cattle fair takes place every year. Pushkar fair is one of the world's largest camel or cattle fair. People come to Pushkar from all parts of Rajasthan for trade of cattles. Some come to sell and others to buy. Most of the traders move here for a week with their families and make Pushkar their home for Pushkar fair. Beside enjoying seeing live cattle trading one can also enjoy Competitions such as the Matka Phod, Longest Moustache, Bridal Competition, Camel race, Horse race and many other games played by the locals.
Suddenly Pushkar turns into a colorful town with thousand of people (men and women) come to Pushkar in their colorful attire like bracelets, clothes, textiles and colorful fabrics. Town becomes a business place for natives of Rajasthan who set their multi colored shop to sell handicrafts items they make at home. Folk Musions / dancers entertain the visitors around the Fair ground area and inside the stadium.
