The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company, Shop & Working Dairy

 

Watch how cheddar is being made in Cheddar. The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company is the only cheese maker left in Cheddar.  When you visit the shop, you can see how traditional cheddar is made. Traditional authentic cheddar is handmade and takes seven hours to make. There is a viewing area where you can see all the stages of making the cheese starting from milk. You can watch the cheese makers doing the work live or you can also watch a short film that documented the whole process. You can then go on to the Taster Bar where you can try out any or all of the cheeses. There are trained staffs to help you as you try to find what cheese you really like. Admission fee is £1.95 for adults while accompanied children below 16 can enter for free. The shop is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day the whole year through except Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. It is located at The Cliffs on Cheddar Gorge and is easily reachable if you are staying at the beautiful Somerset holiday cottages.

 

Muchelney Pottery

 

The Muchelney Pottery is located in the ancient parish of Muchelney on the Somerset Levels. Muchelney is popular for the 10thC Benedictine abbey and is a wonderful place to visit if you are staying at the popular Somerset holiday cottages. A visit to the pottery will let you see the 3 potters who are making different kinds of hand-thrown, wood-fired stoneware. You will get the chance to see the different production work starting from throwing, turning, handling, glazing, firing the kiln depending on what work is scheduled during the time that you visit. You can also see the beautiful signed pots that you can buy from the showroom. There is no admission fee to enter the workshop.
