Be Creative

There are so many more jobs in national parks besides those of park rangers or gardeners. You can work in food concessions, lead nature hikes, manicure garden beds. You can work maintenance, or security areas. If you really think about it there are lots of jobs out there. You can teach recreation classes, work in administration and many other areas.

Volunteer

If you are having a hard time getting your foot in the door, or you just don’t have any parks and recreation experience, you can still easily qualify for jobs by volunteering. Volunteer for jobs in national parks in areas that you are interested in. So if you want to be a ranger, then offer your services in leading hikes and helping other rangers out. You will learn more about the career, and about nature and will figure out whether the job is right for you or not.

Find Jobs outside your Area

If this is really what you want, then look at areas just outside your city. Every Park in the country hires thousands of workers every summer season. There are jobs in food, housekeeping, retail, and just about everywhere. Not only that, but most parks offer some type of low cost living quarters too.

National parks are like small towns or cities that open up every season, and they need help in all areas. Some jobs in national parks like the Grand Canyon or Yosemite include jobs at the gas station, the grocery store, the souvenir shop, etc. You just need to think creatively and think about all the different types of jobs available, then go out and start asking around.
