Parking lots are the location for many attacks.  Before you park your car,How to Be Safe in Parking Lots and Structures Articles keep in mind these rules:

Put valuables and packages in the trunk or out of view before you arrive at your destination.

Drive with your car doors locked and windows shut. Keep your billfold and purse out of view while driving. Don't leave them next to you on the seat. If you have the option, choose a parking structure or ramp that is well-lighted. Park in a illuminated area of the lot or ramp.

When you can, park your car as close as possible to an exit in a ramp, or near the attendant's office in a lot.

If you must leave your key with attendant, leave just your car key. Check parking ramp or lot for security measures, such as video cameras and regular patrols.

Do not leave any valuables where they can be seen from outside the vehicle. Keep your parking receipt.

Walk in the middle of the ramp driveway. Display a confident and positive attitude.

Many people believe that once they reach their vehicles they are safe. This is not true, because your vehicle may offer a place for thieves to conceal themselves.

When you arrive at your vehicle, take time to look around and behind you. Stay alert and don't forget your situation. When thieves observe that you are not paying attention of where you are and seem disoriented they are more likely to attack. Look around and inside your vehicle prior to unlock the door and get in.  Lock your door quickly and start your engine and get the car moving as soon as possible.

If you are being followed while driving, go to the closest police or fire station and honk your horn.  Carry your cell phone, and call 911.  Don't drive home or pull over to the side of the street.

Keeping safe is being alert and using common sense.
