The spreads differ in number of cards in the spread. The simple spreads involve between five and one card. The rest involve between six and all the cards in the tarot deck.

The card on the left of the pile represents the history of the question, while the card on the center is associated with the current events surrounding the question. The last card on the right represents the possible future of the question.

The next tarot spread for beginners is the four-card tarot spread. To interpret this, the reader shuffles the cards with the question in mind. Then the reader picks four cards from the top of the pack and spreads them on the table with the face down and from left to right. From left to right, the first tarot card depicts the past, the second the present and the third the future of the question at hand. The fourth card is the answer to the question.
