Why Should Children Wear High Visibility Clothing?

That’s where high visibility clothing comes in. It’s a sad fact, but many children die each year from getting hit by a car. This is usually around schools. While the blame can be given to the irresponsible driver not following the speed requirements of the school area or paying enough attention, more can be done by the parents to avoid tragic accidents like this as well, around schools and other places. Incorporate high visibility clothing into the child’s everyday clothing. They don’t need to be decked out in it from top to bottom. Instead alternate the clothes. One day they can wear kids hi vis work pants and then next they can wear a hi vis jacket. It can be made part of the child’s everyday routine to the point where they don’t question having to wear high visibility clothing.

If kids start to think that it’s cool to wear high visibility clothing, half the battle is won. Holographic clothing is starting to become a trend amongst teenagers (not for safety reasons, of course) and if the same can be done for young children’s clothing, they will be much safer. Incorporating elements of high visibility into clothes (reflective patches, light up shoes, etc.) will make it seem natural and less like children are dressing in ridiculously overbearing safety gear.

The lure of looking like their role models can be used for young children as well. If they admire construction workers because one of their parents work in construction or anything along that line, they can wear kids hi vis work pants to emulate their heroes, while simultaneously wearing high visibility clothing that will keep them safe.

Wearing high visibility clothing is especially important during winter times when weather conditions can make it much harder to spot pedestrians. During the winter months’ children should wear more than just a reflective patch on their jacket, for example. Luckily winter raincoats come in many reflective options, meaning that they will be very visible to cars and warm.

Wearing high visibility clothes is no substitute for knowing the rules of the road. Children should still be taught not to jaywalk, not to run and to look both ways before crossing the street. Drivers should also pay more attention to the roads and should be fined more for driving fast in school zones. Better discipline from both parents and the law is the only way to reduce the number of accidents that happen on the roads each year. Keep the children safe, let them wear high visibility clothing.
