Effective Internet advertising takes many forms and employs many varied techniques,Banner Ads and How They Work in Affiliate Marketing Articles some more effective than others. One tried and true technique that has changed very little over the years is the banner ad. Banner ads derived their name from their similarity to a banner in the physical world (versus one in the virtual one) in that they most often span the width of the page not unlike their physical cousins. Truthfully, banner ads come in all shapes and sizes, and their effectiveness can be adequately gauged by the droves of would-be customers they are able to attract towards a target website, provided they are used correctly and effectively.

The unfortunate truth is that many affiliate marketers just starting out waste a lot of time, money, and effort throwing banner ads up all over the Internet, believing falsely that simply blanketing the Web with advertisements will increase sales. In the short term, this sort of plan does increase visibility, yet in the long term, costs add up and more effective and efficient use of banner advertising should be desired. Locating ideal spots for banner advertising is a lot more common sense albeit some “running of numbers” will be necessary. The first thing to look for when targeting a most hospitable site for your banner advertisement should be similarity of purpose, yet not too similar. Let me explain. It would make sense to place a banner advertisement leading customers to your website selling motorcycle brake pads on an existing site about motorcycle maintenance. It would not be ideal to place your banner ad on a motorcycle parts site, however, due to the inherent competition that site would provide with yours. Common sense, yes? Your successful banner ad should be placed on a site that has complementary products or services to your own, yet not exactly the same as to avoid competition. A second aspect to consider when choosing an appropriate site involves website traffic. How many visitors visit the proposed site on a daily, weekly, monthly, even yearly basis? The higher amount of traffic, the larger audience that gains exposure to your banner advertisement, and the more potential customers you will be likely to glean as a result.

Banner advertisements are extremely effective in affiliate marketing provided they are well placed, and monitored/tracked to ensure they are working for your product or services. If after several months numbers do not improve as a result of their placement, perhaps a new location could be found that would prove more desirable aka more lucrative.
