There are several different types of car repair mechanics and locations to choose from. Here is a comparison of the three main types of establishments to help you choose where to bring your vehicle.

Dealer

Car repair from the dealership is the obvious safe choice for many drivers. Dealer service is very reliable and all parts are new original equipment manufactured, so you can be assured it will be the right fit for your vehicle. They also use certified technicians, charge flat rates for services, and may be able to better diagnose your vehicle.

There are a few disadvantages to using a dealer. Overall, prices tend to be higher than private or chain shops. However, because pricing is based on a flat rate scale, if they estimate to fix a brake line in two hours, you will be charged for two hours regardless if it takes thirty minutes or four hours. There will be no surprises when you receive the bill. While some dealer techs work faster, that is because there is incentive for them to hustle customers through quickly. They get paid a similar flat rate, meaning finishing more jobs in less time raises their profit. This could encourage them to perform the job fast but sloppy.

Chain Shops

There are several different types of car repair chain shops located throughout the US. Many are auto shops that offer additional services. Most of these centers only specialize in a few common breakdowns or maintenance needs such as oil changes, brake pad replacement, or tires. Some may not even be equipped to properly diagnose problems that are not somehow related to their area of expertise. A tire center, for example, won't be of much assistance if you have an electrical issue.
Chain shops offer lower rates than dealers and often advertise special discounts, offers, and coupons that can help further decrease the price. They also have warranties or guarantees on services and materials. Since they have a reputation to uphold and corporate mandated guidelines to follow, even if you do have a problem you will likely be compensated without much fuss. Most will also have a separate customer service office that can be contacted.

Independent

Bringing your vehicle into an independent mechanic can be a hit or miss. Many people simply avoid privately owned and run shops altogether due to their bad reputation and the intimidation factor. While there is a chance of getting scammed, bad diagnostics, or a longer waiting period, finding a reliable independent mechanic can be a great value. They'll have reasonable pricing, be willing to go the extra mile to make you a repeat customer, and have much more flexible working hours.

If you find a great independent car repair shop, hang onto it, and reward them by providing plenty of customer referrals. Besides potential for rip offs though, another disadvantage is potential lack of continuing education for techs. Many old timers may cling to out of date techniques and not use updated technology that is available. Seek shops that still hire younger mechanics.
