Auto Repair: Oil Change

The oil change procedure is a form of auto repair in the sense that lubricant in the vehicle is replaced with unused oil. The reason for changing the oil is to keep the engine running smoothly. The used lubricant will eventually accumulate particles as well as break down and change into a sludge form that is detrimental to the health of the engine. If it is not changed within a specific time period or mileage range the engine might be damaged due to the accumulated particles. The sludge will promote a very fine break down of the steel parts in the machine which will make it prone to heat and corrosion if left unattended. The auto repair alternative to a corroded engine is the replacement of the parts which has corroded or the entire engine block itself is it has been damaged too much.

The companies that manufacture the vehicles have a recommendation of their own for the timetable to replace the lubricant. Brand new vehicles usually have a tighter schedule than older ones. The reason behind this is that the new ones have engines that need to adjust initially to the usage of the owners. Auto repair or follow ups for maintenance of the new vehicle is usually schedule at specific mileage periods. When the new owners have used their vehicles for around one to two thousand miles, car manufacturers recommend the first oil change. In the past, the timetable used to be shorter but recent improvements to most machines and the lubricants that are used for them have improved the timetable immensely. The schedule is usually followed for at least three times before a set schedule is recommended. The schedule is dependent on the mileage that the manufacturer has set but there are times when the vehicles is not used so much and the time schedule is used to determine when the oil change is needed.

The more recent adjustment to the mileage is about five to seven thousand miles before changing the lubricant. This is if ordinary engine oil is used for the machine but synthetic can last even longer in terms of quality and the vehicles that uses this can be changed for around seven to nine thousand miles.

The changes in the schedule for this type of auto repair procedure are mainly based on the length of mileage or the period of time. For many, mileage is the basis for this because the vehicles are usually used daily. Once the scheduled mileage is in range, the oil change can be done at any affiliated service garage. Some car owners do their own oil changes because the process is basically easy. The disposal of the used lubricant needs to be done responsibly and carefully. Services garages know how to dispose of the lubricant and some might accept the used ones from the car owners who do their own changing. For many, though, it is better to bring their vehicles to the service garage, unless they have the time and effort to spare to do it on their own.
