Don't Drink Alcohol & Drive

Never get behind the wheel of an automobile if you've had too much to drink. In fact, don't drive if you've even had one or two cocktails or beers. A person who has had a few drinks may think he or she is just fine, but studies have proven that this simply isn't the case. Many fatalities occur because of driving while intoxicated. Not only that, it's a crime. Even if a person doesn't get into an accident, he or she could still be thrown behind bars and lose the privilege of driving.

Go The Speed Limit

It's important that motorists drive the speed limit. Going too fast isn't the only dangerous way to travel the roads. If a person is driving too slowly, that could also cause a problem. If a slow car is only traveling 35 MPH on the freeway and someone comes up behind them going 70 MPH, it may be too late for the fast auto to react. Drivers often assume someone is going the speed limit and it's hard to tell in some conditions such as dark or stormy weather. The rule of thumb is to "go with the flow of traffic."

Wear Safety Restraints

Adults should wear seatbelts and the kids should wear safety restraints or be strapped into the appropriate sized car seat. This is a very important yet simple step to take. Being thrown around inside or out of the vehicle can not only break bones and cause serious injuries, it can also be an invitation to the car behind you to run over you if you get thrown out. Strap everyone in. It's the law.

No one is supposed to ride in the front seat of a moving vehicle unless they are at least 12 years old. Why? Because they are too small to be in the range of fire of an airbag. If brake repair hasn't been performed, the halting devices might fail, causing a collision and an inflated airbag. Airbags are wonderful safety devices if the person sitting in the front is fully grown. Youngsters, however, are too small physically and can be suffocated by the device. Don't get talked into something that is illegal and dangerous. Just say "no!"
