The first place you may want to check for a company is online. Of course you can always look up road haulage companies in the local phone book. A third option is to ask other people you know for suggestions of companies that might suit your needs.

This is where you talk to the company and ask a series of questions to figure out which one best suit your needs. Remember that the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask. These are some of the questions you may find useful in figuring out whether the transport company can haul what you need in a way that will get the job done right.

One of the most important questions is what type of vehicles they have for transporting goods in? Let’s say you need to ship gasoline to the station from the refinery. Then you would not want to send a box truck to pick it up because it would not be safe. Next you need to find out if they have the proper permits for hazardous material. This is required to legally haul gasoline because it is hazardous and flammable.

What type of insurance do they have and what is covered? You would not want to have your valuable merchandise stolen and not get proper compensation for it. Do they have warehousing or pallet services available? Dose the company service the area you need your material to be shipped to? What type of reputation dose the companies have? Is the company known to deliver the product on time? Dose the company offer discounts for volume orders? Do they make multiple drops? Do they have trained fork lift operators to load and unload the trucks? What is included or not in the base contract? The cheapest company is not always the best option.
