Despite its current struggles,GM Introduces All New GMC Terrain Articles General Motors has several vehicles in the pipeline, new cars, trucks and crossovers which could help the struggling behemoth stay afloat. That, along with federal funding. One of its newest vehicles is the GMC Terrain, a small crossover-like vehicle that is also badged as a Chevrolet Equinox.

Like its Chevy sibling, the Terrain is expected to get 30 mpg on the highway, 21 city thanks to its standard 2.4L four-cylinder engine that features direct injection. Also being made available is a 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine delivering an estimated 264 horsepower (197 kW). Both Terrain engines are paired to efficiency-enhancing six-speed automatic transmissions.

“GMC is a strong, core brand for GM and the Terrain crossover SUV is the latest example of how we’re adapting to changing market conditions,” said Docherty. “As we first demonstrated with the Acadia crossover, GMC is committed to offering the capable vehicles customers seek, with the personal technologies they expect.”

The GMC Terrain will go on sale late this summer, but pre-production models are on display at auto shows beginning with the New York International Auto Show. Well equipped, the Terrain offers the following equipment on all front or all wheel drive versions:
  • Standard rear vision camera
  • Programmable power rear liftgate
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone capability
  • MultiFlex sliding rear seat that increases passenger comfort or provides optimal cargo space
  • Remote vehicle start
  • USB audio connectivity; MP3 playback
  • Seven-inch touch-screen navigation system and a 40-gigabyte hard drive
  • DVD-based rear-seat entertainment system with two independent screens
  • Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
Regarding the Terrain's bold design, John Cafaro Jr., director of exterior design, Global Crossover Vehicles, had this to say: “We wanted to carve the GMC Terrain away from the pack and establish its identity as a powerful, fresh crossover SUV with a confident and strong stance. Everything about the Terrain communicates a sense of tailored toughness and passionate craftsmanship.”

Some of the additional design features include a unique, three-element grille that is highlighted by a striking chrome surround and projector-beam headlamps mounted in large, rectangular housings with chrome accents. That look should help the Terrain stand out in a sea of smaller sport/utility and crossover vehicles.

The Terrain's main competition includes the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4. Beginning prices haven't been announced, but should parallel the Equinox's starting price which is around $23,000.
