Introducing GPS Fleet Tracking to Your Employees

 GPS fleet tracking systems can either be readily accepted or readily rejected by your drivers. The key to helping them accept and embrace a system you have selected is to properly introduce it to them.

If you manage a large group of vehicles, you already know the benefits of GPS fleet tracking. Yet, you may find that your drivers are not quite as excited about having these systems installed on their vehicles as you are. They may view them as an intrusion on their work, or they may think that you do not trust them. You may even hear that the drivers do not feel they need a “babysitter” in order to do their jobs well. If you are going to install a system, you can make it go much more smoothly by introducing it to your employees the right way.

Bring in a Company Representative

Many GPS fleet tracking companies offer to have their representatives come to your business to introduce the system. This can be a great benefit, because it allows a neutral third party to explain all of the benefits of the system, not just the benefits to you as the business owner, but also the benefits to the employees. Because the presenter is not you, the boss, you may find that your employees are more responsive to it.

Show Lots of Graphs

Graphs that show how the system helps similar businesses improve driving skills, productivity, and income can help your drivers accept that this is not a babysitting program, but rather a program designed to help everyone in the company succeed. While you may have access to graphs showing how these systems cut down on wasted fuel due to driver’s idling too long or taking personal time in the vehicle, you may want to avoid putting these up, because they will contribute to the “babysitter” view that some employees have.

Be Honest

The vast majority of your drivers do their jobs well, and they understand that one or two of the proverbial bad apples are going to make their jobs harder. If the individual who is dropping a load they are supposed to pick up is not doing his or her job correctly, then a driver may have to sit longer waiting for his or her work. Explain how personal trips, excess idling time, and other driver errors hurt everyone’s ability to do the job, and that the GPS fleet tracking system will help cut down on the number of these problems that you have. Those who are not doing their jobs well may make a fuss, but you want to weed out these drivers after all, don’t you?

It’s All in the Approach

If you introduce the GPS fleet tracking program to your drivers with a negative attitude, explaining how terrible they are doing and exactly how your system is going to catch them “in the act,” they are going to balk at the introduction. If, however, you take a positive approach, outlining the benefits to everyone in the company once you install the system, then you will find that it is better accepted. By thinking of a positive spin to put on the installation of the new system, you are better poised to have it fully accepted, and even embraced, by your drivers.
