Personalised number plates are very popular nowadays. Having you name or something of meaning on your car has become almost as important as the car itself. Number plates are distributed by the DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) and usually come with your car when you but it. With millions of pounds being made at number plate auctions this shows their popularity.

Number plates can be bought online from companies specialising in the buying and selling of personalised registrations. One such company is Northumbria Numbers. Established in 1995,Number Plates Down Under Articles Northumbria Numbers pride themselves on giving the best service in the Cherished Numbers business.

Car registrations in the UK always have black characters on a yellow background. Some newer ones also come with the European Union flag on them. The current system was introduced in 2001 stating number plates are have seven characters in the format, from left to right: area code, age identifier and a three letter sequence. One thing to be aware of when purchasing a new personalised number plate is you cannot make your car look younger as this is illegal.

In Australia, number plates have a different style to the number plates we are familiar with. They are issued by the government, either the state or commonwealth and plates normally last for life. New plates are also issued if the owner requests them or moves to another state.

Australian number plates were normally issued with white characters on a black background. They also used to give set characters depending on which state you were living in. This system has now been removed and states chose their own system. For example in Australian Capitol territory issues number plates with blue text on a white background and with “ACT” above the registration and “CANBERRA - THE NATION'S CAPITALbelow and the code format is Yxx-nnx where x represents a letter and n a number. In Queensland number plates have maroon text on a white background and “QUEENSLAND - SUNSHINE STATE" or "QUEENSLAND - THE SMART STATE" below the registration with the format nnn-xxx.
