Oil Change- Filter Change too

Most car owners probably know that it is important to go get an oil change periodically. If you look at your receipt for the process, you might notice an itemized list saying what each part had for a cost. On that list you should find a filter. Changing the filter on your vehicle is an integral part of an oil change.

The filter is actually very important to the way your car runs. It is what keeps large pieces of dirt and other particles out of your engine. Once that filter gets dirty, it is no longer going to adequately do its job. Some might even suggest changing your filter more often than the oils and the oils will stay clean longer. Doing this could save you money in the long run on purchasing oils. Another job of the filter is to reserve some of the oils in your engine's anti-drain back valve so that when your car is started after sitting there will be some to go up into the engine.

You may not have realize how important that part of your engine was. Now you know, and now, you might ask your car shop about the value of changing the filter before the actual oils need to be changed. You would still have both the filter and oils changed together at the normal times, but you might do just the filter at some point. Your mechanic should be able to tell you whether this is a wise option for your vehicle. It may not be worth the money in the end, but then again it might if you use one of the more costly oils on your engine.

As you consider the schedule for an oil change as well a changed filter, make sure that you look to see what your owner's manual states. Newer vehicles and newer oils allow for longer periods of time between changes. All auto mechanics may not follow this new way of thinking, so you will need to implement your own schedule if this is the case.

If you do your own changes, perhaps now you are wondering how important the type of filter is that you use. It is always wise to look this up in your owner's manual, but it is also wise to ask someone who knows cars well enough to know about what filters work the best at the best price.

Do not ever neglect the filter when doing the change thinking it is less important than having clean oils. They work together to get the job done right.
