Driving a truck can be a great job. Not everything is necessarily easy or fun though. There are risks and added dangers involved that may not occur when operating a typical vehicle. It is simply a fact that there are lots of accidents many of them fatal that are caused or involve a semi truck. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the risk and improve the safety of an eighteen wheeler. Some are as simple as having a regular oil change and some require more thorough work.

Maintenance entails a lot of different things for a truck that is used for hauling and the government mandates many of them. Because a regular vehicle requires only occasional maintenance and an oil change and because owners only put a few tens of thousands of miles on it per year it requires more infrequent work. On the other hand these trucks drive hundreds of thousands of miles and are under constant towing strain and thus have a lot more wear and tear. It is necessary to check every day to make sure that everything is in order.
The first and most important thing to do is monitor all of the different fluid levels. Lubricant, coolant, transmission, and brake fluids all need to be monitored to make sure there is plenty in there and they are not leaking or contaminated. Part of this is to have an oil change frequently and have the transmission and coolant system vetted and refilled.

Because of the massive amount of weight being carried it is incredibly important to check on the brakes often. They are the only lifeline between several hundred tons in control and the same weight barreling out of control. The wreckage is unimaginable and this is by far the one thing to always be sure is fully up to date and functioning.
Because of the same massive load the tires require a lot of maintenance. It is super common for a trucker to experience blowouts and so make sure that before leaving on any trip the condition of all eighteen wheels is satisfactory.

Both the lights and the turn signals need to be checked and replaced if they are broken or malfunctioning. It can be hard to bring a large vehicle like this to a halt and so visibility is very important. Just as it is possible to be seen, it is critical to see other cars so all of the mirrors should be examined and positioned to provide the greatest visibility.
Proper maintenance can make every trip a safe one. Having an oil change and all of the engine systems checked out are just a couple of good precautions to ensure that everything is safe and secure during transit.
