Peugeot Citroen, the French car manufacturer, has disclosed the outcomes of its 'real-world' fuel efficiency tests. The results revealed that the fuel efficiency of its models is approximately 40% lower than the previously published figures by the company. The company conducted tests on 30 of its main models under various conditions such as 'urban', 'rural', and motorway. The vehicles were equipped with car DVD or Android Car GPS systems and loaded with luggage, while their climate-control systems were operational to mimic realistic driving conditions.

The company's Peugeot models,Peugeot Citroen Unveils 'Real-World' Fuel Efficiency Data Articles equipped with standard features like car DVD, android car stereo, showed a fuel efficiency that was 44% less than the published figures. Similarly, 11 Citroen models demonstrated 39% less fuel efficiency, and three DS models showed a 40% decrease in fuel efficiency. Earlier this year, Peugeot Citroen announced that it would conduct such tests in the aftermath of the Volkswagen diesel-emissions scandal to enhance transparency. The tests were conducted in collaboration with advocacy groups France Nature Environment and Transport & Environment, and the data was audited by Bureau Veritas. The company had previously stated that the tested figures for the Peugeot 308 sedan, Citroen C4 Picasso, and the DS3 subcompact – all diesel models – were significantly lower than the previously published figures.

The New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) Figures

Industry analysts have long argued that the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) figures were overly generous compared to real-world driving conditions. Therefore, the lower-than-published figures are not surprising, especially with Android car GPS.

Peugeot Citroen's Commitment to Transparency

Gilles Le Borgne, Executive Vice President of Research & Development, commented on the announcement, "The PSA Group has today published real-world consumption data for 30 Peugeot, Citroen and DS models, in line with the commitment to transparency made in October 2015. As part of its drive to continuously provide customers with more information, the Group will publish figures for another 20 models by the end of the year and introduce a simulator allowing customers to reduce their fuel consumption depending on driving conditions, thereby lowering their CO2 emissions. In 2017, the PSA Group will move to the next level by extending measurements to pollutant emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) in customer driving conditions."

Other Companies Overstating Fuel Economy

In addition to Volkswagen, companies such as Hyundai-Kia and Ford have been caught overstating the fuel economy on certain cars. They have updated their car equipment, especially high-quality car DVD player, latest gm navigation. This may have been an effort for Peugeot Citroen to stay one step ahead of that process. Regardless, the company claims it is the first automaker to voluntarily run tests and publish results about real world vs. published fuel-economy figures.
