Over a year ago we tested the Sonata 2009,Test car: 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE Articles back then the Hyundai product we found quite round, with an acceptable balance between performance and price. The Korean brand revolution began only later would transform the vision that it has the demanding American consumer. The unit we drove was the 2009 Hyundai Sonata SE now had the chance to thoroughly test the same car, Sonata SE, but a 2011 model, and we have to say that the changes are remarkable! Hyundai began its transformation with the Genesis and Genesis Coupe. But it was only the beginning. To succeed in the U.S. Market required a more radical offensive. Now comes the new Sonata, the most important launch for the brand in 2010. Changes in this car are really deep and affect from its image in the depths of the heart of the machine. Corrected and improved Sonata Although transformation is generally and noticeable from the first impression, there are certain elements that are worth highlighting. One of the most important is the new engine. Hyundai removed the old V6 and introduced the new Theta II GDI four-cylinder with direct injection system , present in all versions. The brand also added a new six-speed automatic transmission. With these two elements, built by the manufacturer, the sedan's performance improved considerably, with 198 HP (200 in the SE version, our test unit) , the Sonata places in front of the competitors in its segment. Another positive effect is found in fuel economy, where the numbers of the new Sonata also placed first with respect to cars of the same category of other firms. The Sonata achieves 22 mpg city and 35 mpg highway , with results backed by EPA. The final blow comes with the Hyundai auto equipment, much higher as standard to what we are accustomed to find in a sedan is not a mark of luxury. The Sonata debuts as the first in its segment to offer as standard Bluetooth hands-free system. It also offers satellite radio (XM) and navigation and real-time traffic, which can also be enjoyed from the standard version, but only for the first three months (nothing is perfect).
