Ford plans to use this weeks 2009 Chicago Auto Show to reveal its latest all-new offering, the 2010 Ford Transit Connect.
The Ford Transit Connect is the latest is Ford’s attempt to remain competitive in the light commercial truck segment, going head to head with other products from domestic automakers such as the Dodge Sprinter, as well as newcomers such as Nissan’s all-new NV2500.
The 2010 Ford Transit Connect has already been available in Europe. As Ford looks to bring more European Ford vehicles to North America, Los Angeles Commercial Trucks is happy to see that this also includes commercial vehicles. Although models outside the U.S. will be available in a variety of configurations, the Ford Transit Connect will be limited to a single wheelbase and body style, with sliding doors on both sides and two doors in the rear of the vehicle. There will be a panel van available without glass on the sides or the rear doors.
While Ford will sell a few all-electric Transit Connect vehicles in 2010, most will be sold with a 2.0 Duratec four cylinder engine, mated to a four-speed automatic. This powertrain may not empress many of Nashville Ford dealers' shoppers, but the engine will produce around 136 horsepower and 128 lb ft of torque. Although new to U.S. shores, the 2010 Ford Transit Connect is actually a carryover from 2003, with a modest update in 2006.
Perhaps the closest competitor to the Ford Transit Connect is the Chevrolet HHR Panel. However, the interior of the Transit Connect will provide far more storage space, about 135 cubic ft. to the HHR’s 63.1 cubic ft. With the Transit Connect's high roof, a Ford dealership in St. Louis believes there is more room for shelving in the rear, and even additional space above the windshield.
The 2010 Ford Transit Connect will be available for just over $21,000 when it goes on sale. Newark Ford dealers says the price is competitive for a commercial vehicle that provides ample cargo capacity. Additionally, the Transit Connect will be available with conveniences such as front and side airbags, air-conditioning, and even available internet access and tool tracking systems. The vehicle will be offered by Ford Work Solutions.
