The key is to get the vehicle in as soon as you notice any problems so they can be taken care of right away, before they cause more damage.
Common Signs to Look For
The following are some of the most common signs that your vehicle needs transmission repair. Do not put off having this taken care of if you notice any of these problems.
The check engine light comes on. When this happens, there is a significant problem. Stop and get the vehicle into the mechanic right away.
The vehicle does not move forward. Even when put into drive and you press the accelerator, it does not move, or moves very slowly.
The vehicle will go forward but does not move backward, even when you accelerate.
The vehicle has no shifting or very rough shifting. While driving, the vehicle will shift from one gear to the next automatically. If may not do this well or it may jolt you while you are accelerating.
You may notice fluid on the ground under the car after it is parked. If there is a reddish brown fluid, this could be a sign of a larger problem.
Does the vehicle vibrate? It may do so when it shifts or it may do so when you push the pedal lower to go faster. It may be a minor shake or a more consistent, prolonged vibration.
Does the car buck? This often happens when you are moving it from the drive position into the reverse or back.
When you initially turn the vehicle on in the morning, does it hesitate to move? In some cases, it may buck or jolt as you change gears or it may just not move at all.
Do you notice you are getting bad gas mileage? This is a common indication of a problem related to the transmission.
In some vehicles, the sounds are enough to warrant concern. Clanking, loud squealing and humming are common problems.
Transmission repair is necessary in most of these situations. Though you may only need repairs and not a replacement, it is still critical to bring the vehicle in as soon as possible to get these repairs underway.
