Before you hit the road,Traveling by Car With Kids Articles make sure your child's car seat is properly secured. Pack the car before you put children inside – and allow them enough room.

Pack everything you want easy access to on the road separately so you're not forced to dig around in your suitcase en route. Jackets and hats, for example, should be within easy reach.

Keep basic supplies such as sunscreen and insect repellent in a separate bag so you can take advantage of opportunities for outdoor fun along the way.

Pack plenty of water, a first-aid kit, and a flashlight in case you break down at night. Don’t forget essential items – wet-wipes, small tissue packs, water bottles, and pens and paper for games.

Provide children with their own small travel bags and encourage them to fill them with their own choices of games, toys and diversions.

Make sure nothing can fly loose that will hinder you while driving or hurt your children.

Fit an extra mirror and train it on the back seat so that you can safely keep an eye on children.

On long trips, consider travelling through the night or early morning, times when children are more likely to sleep during the journey

Stop every two or three hours to let children stretch their legs. Although stopping adds time to the trip, it keeps travel interesting for kids. A quick stop to burn off energy is often all they need to happily get back in the car.
