Although “cool” shouldn't be the attribute you should be concentrating on while choosing a car for young drivers,What's Cool for Teen Drivers Articles where safety should be priority number one, it still wouldn't hurt to get a car which will make your son or daughter look good and will have fun driving it. It's not impossible to find a vehicle that combines those qualities, you just have to do a little research, see which cars are popular among the young crowd and then determine if there is one that is safe enough, that also has good fuel economy, with low insurance costs.

It's not difficult to assume that youngsters prefer smaller, compact cars, that are easy to handle and doesn't burn too much gas. Some of the cars that meet those requirements are the Mercedes Smart, the Volkswagen Beetle and the Ford Fiesta.

You could say that the Smart is the younger drivers' favourite. It's a pretty small car, with a modern design, and a comfortable and functional interior, surprisingly roomy for a car that size. The body panels can come in various colours, and can be easily recycled, which is good, because the younger population is becoming more and more environmentally-aware. As far safety is concerned, there is an acceleration skid control system and a hydraulic brake assist. It also provides a decent fuel efficiency, with 34 mpg/city and 38 mpg/highway driving.

The Volkswagen Beetle is strong competitor of Mercedes Smart. It has a cute exterior design, with nice, curved lines, while the interior features a multi-functional sport steering wheel, which makes the car easy to control, and a comfortable back-seat with sufficient legroom, uncharacteristic for such vehicles. Its fuel economy is a bit worse compared to the Smart, with 22 mpg/city and 31 mpg/highway, but the great safety features and excellent design should be reason enough to attract young drivers.

The Ford Fiesta may be less attractive then the above mentioned cars, but still manages to appeal to young drivers, due to its roomy interior and great handling. It is pretty, though, with a sporty look and sharp lines on the side panel. It has excellent fuel economy, and offers a nice, dynamic ride, thanks to the electric power-assisted steering and the 6-speed automatic transmission.

So, while cars with top-notch safety features are a priority for young drivers, why not take the time and consider buying a car that provides something more than that, such as good looks and a fun ride.
