Beam Sensors – Delivering high performance in architectural industry

Many times I heard about the importance of beam sensors in today’s architectural business but last week I read an article about it which helped me learn more about these sensors and their functioning.

The first and foremost purpose of using a beam sensor is to determine the differential movement and rotation in architectural constructions. Typically, there are two types of beam sensors available in the market – horizontal for monitoring settlement or heave and vertical sensors for monitoring lateral displacement and convergence.

The most commonly used application for beam sensors is pedestrian doors. These types of beam sensors contain an infrared beam set that is used for various applications. The beams fit feasibly into a pre-drilled ½" hole and are a snap fit. Wiring is by a quick disconnect cable that can be daisy-chained up to 30' (in 15' increments). The beams provide an LED indication at their back side for ease of alignment and troubleshooting.

How a beam sensor is installed? The first thing you have to do is to drill a ½” hole at the decided mounting location. In case of using more than one set of beams, alternate the beam orientation at right. Attach the cable from its end point to the desired beam mounting location. Then plug the beam cable in via the snap together connector. After this, the beam is installed into the ½” hole and pressed until it fits into the opening. Typically, the wall thickness of the drilled material should not exceed 1/8”.

In any beam sensor, wiring is the most important part that affects the results. In case of a LO-Linux lockout module, plug each beam into the connection point at the module. Connection points are identified on the LO-Linux. If using sensor beams directly, make sure that the NPN/Light Operate Output works with the door controller.

The most commonly used application where beam sensors are used is home security system which tends to provide superior protection against thefts and burglars that may cause any harm to them. Based on your application objective, you can choose from a range of beam sensors available in the market. However, it is important for an individual to do a comprehensive research before buying a particular type of beam sensor. This research will help you determine the most perfect type of beam sensors for your application. A wrong selection might lead you to incorrect readings and inappropriate application procedures.
