Yama and Yamuna

The very first and the most important story are about the Yamuna and her brother Yama. It is believed that the ‘Sun God’ or better known as Surya married the beautiful princess named Samjna. After marriage, they had two kids, Varni or better known as Yamuna and Yama. Life was alright for them until Samjna decided she would leave heaven as she was missing her life on Earth. In order to keep Surya completely unaware of her decision, she created her replica and named her ‘Chhaya’. She asked Chhaya to take care of her children and her husband and left Heaven peacefully.

After Samjna’s departure, Chhaya started showing her true colors. She managed to marry Surya and give birth to her own children as well. As a matter of fact, Yamuna and Yama were neglected more than ever by their step-mother. One day, Chhaya hatched a plot against the siblings and asked Surya to throw them out of Heaven. Surya did so. Yamuna landed on Earth and became a river, while Yama landed in hell and became the leader of the underworld or the king of Death. Yamuna, however, married a good prince after landing on Earth.

Life, for both the siblings, went on from then. But, they started missing each other terribly. One fine day, Yama thought of visiting his sister. He visits his sister at her home. Yamuna, being elated and happy welcomes him gracefully. He takes sweets and flowers for her before visiting. This pious day which marks the reunion of Varni and Yama is celebrated as Bhai Dooj. Thus, Bhai Dooj is celebrated all over the world for the reunion of siblings and cousins by remembering the rich bond they share just like Varni and Yama.
