In this article I will cover the basics of setting up a business and also offer some useful tips for first timers who are considering taking the plunge.

To B.Y.O.B is easier said than done. Nevertheless, millions of people do it year after year, and if you are currently dissatisfied with your job, you can either look for a better position in another firm, or you can put your thinking cap on and start thinking about how to B.Y.O.B.

Whatever business it is you intend to start, you will need to have a complete understanding of it in terms of the following points:

• What are the critical success factors of the business ? Does it require specialized knowledge or certain professional qualifications ?

• What are the “things” you need to run this business ? Does it need special equipment, hardware or software ? Can you get them ?

• What about human resources ? Do you have them ? Can you get the people you need easily and cost effectively ?

• What will be the anticipated “burn-rate” of your new business ? Have you considered all possible expenses that might be incurred ?

• How will your business generate revenues ? How fast can you collect these revenues ?

• Are you aware of the pitfalls in this business ? What steps can you take to avoid them in order to ensure success ?

Every business needs a business plan where you project your expenses and your income. You will also need to create your cash-flow plan and keep a close eye on it to monitor your progress and to make any necessary adjustments to keep steering it towards success and profitability. Poor planning and monitoring will ultimately lead to failure.

Once you have done your homework and got your finances in place, take positive action! Take the plunge!
