Cabinets are one of the most useable things in our life. Weather we are at home or offices we are most of the times surrounded by cabinets. According to oxford dictionary cabinet is a piece of furniture which consists of doors, drawers and shelves. This piece of furniture was used for storing and showing purposes. But now it is being used for hundreds of purposes like it is used to keep files and office stuff in offices, to keep the kitchen utensils in kitchens and to store clothes in the bedroom. When the cabinets were first made, they were mostly use to store important papers and other belongings of important nature. The earliest form of cabinet used to take lots of space and was heavy as well in their early days.They were built in the shape of desks and have the drawers to access the storage places.

With the passage of time their shape changed from desk type to tower allowing the user to have an access from the front instead of top access which used to be in the chests. At that time cabinets were made by carpenters and it was a time consuming process. Usually it took days to build a good quality cabinet. That is why cabinet makers were thought to be the best wood workers. Each cabinet maker used to have his own style of carving and making the cabinet. Cabinets made from the wood of oak, pine and cherry were thought to be of great quality and were expensive as well. Only the riches were able to afford cabinets of such a high quality.

In 20th century the cabinets started to enter in the kitchens as well. The reason of such a change was the invention of electrical appliances which needed a place to be installed or stored. Due to this the demand for the cabinets in the market started to increase. As the demand was increasing rapidly and the hand made cabinets were time consuming, machine made cabinets started to enter into the market. These cabinets were light weight and cheaper in nature. These cabinets were usually made of particle board. Flake board and plywood due to which not only the weight was reduced but also the price as well. With the passage of time new designs of cabinets were also introduced in the market.

After keeping a thing in the cabinet, it can be specified with that things name. There are hundreds of types of cabinets depending upon their nature and work. Jewelry cabinets used to be those cabinets in which women use to keep their jewelry and other valuable stuff. China cabinet is a type of cabinet having glazed doors and drawers.Other popular types of cabinets are kitchen cabinets, filing cabinets, tool cabinet and curio cabinet. Today’s machine made cabinets are not that reliable as the cabinets made by cabinet makers used to be. Those cabinets were reliable, durable used to have a long life. Still today the price of hand made cabinets is much more than the modern cabinets.
