One of the most popular and most common jobs of a commercial locksmith involves key duplication. Whether we are talking about keys for home,Commercial Locksmith Key Duplication Articles work, or our car, almost every single one of us has had to deal with key duplication at one point or another. For most of us, this occurs when we move into a new home or when we accidentally place our beloved keys in a location that we promptly forget about. There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to key duplication and the law.

Authorized key duplication is a relatively straightforward process that almost any commercial locksmith can handle. Authorized key duplication simply refers to permission given by the person holding the keys to replicate them. Giving permission is inherent by possession of the keys. Unfortunately, this means that anyone that holds your keys (with or without your permission) can give authorization to duplicate the keys to your home or office or automobile. The most common form of legal authorization include landlords that give new keys to tenants and tell them they can make another copy for their roommate or spouse if they want.

However, there is a definite gray area between authorized and unauthorized key duplication and commercial locksmith services. It is very difficult for a commercial locksmith to tell which individuals are attempting to perform unauthorized key duplication. After all, there is little to stop a person from replicating keys that are in their possession and there are few legal strongholds in place to ensure that the person in possession of the keys has legal right to duplicate them. As such, people that lose their keys or misplace them for any period of time may choose to have all of the locks changed because they can't tell if they've been duplicated and the overall security of their home or office is now compromised.

In short, key duplication is a complex process that involves authorized or unauthorized approval by the key owner for the commercial locksmith to copy the entry set. Because unauthorized key duplication is so easy and so difficult to prevent, it is important to keep track of your keys at all times or change the locks if your set has been missing for a period of time. In this way, you can ensure that your home, office or vehicle remains secure and that your belongings are still there when you get back.
