When choosing baby gifts for the baby, you need to keep in mind that you are really choosing gifts that will make the mother’s life easier. Baby gifts may be used for babies,Did Mom Ask For That Gift? Articles but it’s mom who is faced with the daily care of the child and it’s not always easy. When choosing a baby gift for a baby shower or birth announcement, it’s important to keep the mother in mind as much as the baby.

Such a Small Person with Such Big Needs

It never ceases to amaze that babies need so much. They don’t know they need the hundreds of items of course, but mom sure does. However, the fact the mom and infant do have so many needs makes gift giving easy. Just about anything you choose will be appreciated, but the very best gift is the one that the mother said she would like to have or will be buying herself.

When women are expecting they are always talking about the new baby item just purchased.  There’s furniture sized for children, baby bedding and quilts, growth charts and baby bottles purchased long before the infant arrives. As much as the new mom and dad buy in anticipation, mother is always going have other needs. If you listen to her talk, you will learn a lot about what she needs to add to the nursery so that she’s fully prepared.

Listen to Mom

Listen closely and you might hear her say, “It sure would be nice to get...” or “I still need to buy...”:

 * Soft baby blankets to keep the baby warm in our air conditioned house

 * Baby gift baskets with some age appropriate toys

 * A high quality Petunia Pickle Bottom baby diaper bag

 * A personalized feeding set like I had when I was young

 * Some more baby clothing that is blue or pink or green or...

 * Some unisex clothes because I don’t know if it’s a boy or girl

 * Baby music that is soothing

Unique baby gifts can be created by assembling your own baby gift baskets if you want. You can buy a baby tote pre-filled with infant items and then add a couple of items you know the new mom needs and wants. A baby gift can’t get much nicer because it proves you have paid attention to your friend or family member’s real needs.

Pay Close Attention

It’s a bit disheartening at baby showers when the gifts are completely impractical – like baby clothes sized for a preemie when you already know the baby is going to weigh 8 pounds! The thought is appreciated, of course, but those new preemie sized clothes are headed right for the thrift store because mom doesn’t need them.

Pay attention to what mom has indicated she needs and you can present the perfect gift that will be appreciated and used. That’s the goal with baby gifts – to hand a gift to a new mother knowing she really needed what you bought.
