The tools or instruments that are specially designed to perform different actions during the surgeries, operations and other medical procedures are known as surgical instruments. Basically surgical instruments are used for viewing and modifying various biological tissues.

Some of the surgical instruments are designed for general use and these tools are used in almost all kind of surgeries, while on the other hand some surgical instruments are designed for specific procedures. Following are some surgical tools that are used for different purposes. Forceps : Basically forceps is a hand handled instrument that can be used to hold various objects. Forceps are also used when the fingers of humans are very large to hold or grasp tiny objects. The word forceps is used as both singular and plural. Today there are two types of forceps available in the market. One is known as locking forceps while the other is known as non-locking forceps. Both these two types are available in many specialized forms for different uses.

The example of locking forceps is Kelly forceps and the example of un-locking forceps is Thumb forceps. Kelly forceps are made from stainless steel and they resemble a pair of scissors while Thumb forceps have very smooth tips and they usually held between two fingers and thumb of one hand. Scalpel Blades : Scalpel blades are tiny but extremely sharp blades which can be used for different surgical purposes. It is a very common surgical instrument and the basic use of this tool is to make various incisions in skin and tissues of the patients. Scalpel blades consist of two parts, a blade and a handle. Nowadays in market various types of scalpel blades are available. Some of them are disposable while some scalpel blades are re-useable. Disposable blades are usually consists of plastic handles with a blade and they are only used one time. The re-usable scalpel blades may have a re-Sharp able blade or replaceable blade . The most commonly used type of scalpel blade is lancet. Basically a lancet consists of double edged blade. The lancet blades are usually made up of titanium, stainless steel, diamond, obsidian and tempered steel.

Retractors : Retractor is an instrument which can be used by the surgeons during operations and surgeries. This instrument is used to separate the edges of a wound or surgical incision. Retractors help the surgeons to keep the wound open and facilitate them during the surgery. Retractors are available in different sizes, styles and shapes. Some retractors are just used to open minor cuts and in some cases retractors are also used to obtain more exposure, these retractors are also known as thoracic retractors. Rib retractor is the example of thoracic retractor. Surgical Scissors : There are different types of scissors that are used during surgery. Some surgical scissors have blunt ended blades while other has sharp pointed ends. Different surgical scissors also have different shapes of blades. Some surgical scissors have straight blades and some have curved blades. The curved blade scissors make it easier to perform cutting during operations as compare with straight blade scissors.
