From Zardozi work and gota work to kantha and chikankari, there are different forms of embroideries that can be seen on Indian attires.

In India, embroidery is inspired from nature. In different states you can find embroidery that reflects that region’s flora, fauna and style of living. There are various fabrics on which embroidery is done such as, net, cotton, chiffon, georgette, velvet and silk. Designs vary according to the fabric chosen. Craftsmen make use of zari, silk threads, silver and gold threads, beads, wool and sequins to create stunning designs. Even exotic materials such as beetle wings and seeds are used for adding richness to the garment.

Here are some of the popular embroideries that can be seen on Indian ladies suits:

Zardozi

Craftsmen make use of gold and silver threads to create zardozi embroidery designs. The word Zardozi is derived from Zar and Dozi (Persian) which means gold and embroidery respectively. Since this type of embroidery is done with coiled metal wires studded with beads and stones, the fabric becomes heavy in weight. This is why it is done on fabrics that are thick and heavy such as velvet and silk. You can find Zardozi work done on designer salwar suits and lehengas.

Mirror Work

This form of embroidery is the specialty of Gujarat.  However, it is also practiced in Orissa and Rajasthan. Stitches like buttonhole stitch, cross stitch and satin stitch are used in this combination. Craftsmen make use of different shapes and sizes of mirrors like, round, square, diamond and so on.

Kashmiri Work

This type of embroidery has a wide color spectrum and beautifully composed designs that depict different symbols like grapes, chinar leaf, apple blossoms, plum, saffron flower and birds.

Chikankari

Chikankari or chikan work is a popular form of embroidery that can be seen on designer kurtis in India. It is done mainly on cotton fabric, using a variety of stitches worked together with knotted stitches. This type of embroidery gives designs with raised surfaces. Creation of net or ‘jali’ is one of the specialties of chikankari.

Kantha

This traditional form of embroidery is from West Bengal. It is running stitch used for making different motifs. Kantha is done on many layers of cloth. Not just salwar suits but it is also done on bedsheets, quilts, saris, stoles and napkins. Kantha is also known as Dorukha which means turning worn out garments into beautiful garments.

Phulkari

This form of embroidery is basically a Punjab and Haryana specialty. Phul means flower and kari means embroidery. Vibrant threads are used for making different flower designs on dupatta, saris and kurtis.

Tribal Embroidery

It is also a famous form of embroidery that features simple motifs and bright colors. Tribal embroidery is often free hand and not necessarily symmetrical.
