How do you go about ensuring that your business is successful? It's often tempting to start by thinking about the products that you sell and how you might go about increasing the number of customers that you currently have.

In particular, you may want to consider whether your staff members are producing as much as they could be.

The reason why this is important is because employees are likely to be a primary resource for your business. If you can make the most of such resources, then you will certainly be able to succeed. So how can you go about ensuring that things work for you?

There may be a temptation to think that producing results is all about punishing staff members who are seen to under-perform. In certain companies, there may be an expectation that you can make an example of workers who don't produce the required standards. This should encourage others to avoid such punishments.

In theory, this may all sound pretty sensible. But does it really work? It seems to me that the problem with such an approach is that it may leave some people thinking that you don't provide a particularly positive workplace. You may find that it is extremely difficult to retain employees.

So what are the alternatives? You might seek to look at rewards and this can certainly be a considerably more positive approach. It is not, however, without its problems. Do you really want to get into a situation where you constantly have to reward people, simply to carry out the tasks that they need to do on your behalf? This can be a difficult situation.

The problem with such approaches, when identified in this manner, is that they presume that employees are at fault. There is an assumption that poor performance levels are associated with staff members who aren't pulling their weight. Could you actually be doing more to help them?

There are many strategies that you might employ, in order to assist them. This may mean that you concentrate on really facilitating things, helping to ensure that everything is in place. If you can maintain staff confidence levels, for example, then this is likely to keep them happy and motivated.

Are there sources of conflict within the workplace? It's clear that these will also need to be dealt with, in order to maintain productivity levels.
