Employing a full time Environmental Health and Safety Professional is not feasible for every company,Environmental Health and Safety Consultant on Your Jobsite Articles but many could benefit from having an Environmental Health and Safety Consultant work with your company on a periodic basis.  A Consultant is a cost efficient way to incur the benefits of their expertise without the high ongoing cost of an individual’s salary, taxes, health insurance, and benefits.  An Environmental Health and Safety Consultant can assess your facility and make recommendations to improve worker safety and increase productivity.

The Environmental Health and Safety Consultant will need to make an onsite visit to your facility and witness firsthand how each role is performed on a day to day basis.  A detailed report will be compiled as well as recommendations to improve worker safety.  The recommendations could include Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for employees performing certain duties.  PPE includes hardhats, steel toe boots, respirators, full body suits and harnesses.  Each component of PPE needs to be individually fit to the employee to ensure the equipment properly functions in the given role.  The Environmental Health and Safety Consultant will also need to periodically check at regular intervals to ensure working order and adjust for any changes in the employee, such as fluctuations in weight.  Damaged parts will be repaired or replaced to restore the PPE to proper working condition.

The corporate culture must also require the safety practices to be implemented by the employees.  A respirator that has been fit to the employee is of no use if the employees choose not to wear it.  Continuing education should also be conducted at regular intervals to refresh the employees on the Safety Program in place.  The Environmental Health and Safety Consultant can also revisit areas of the facility at this time to make necessary updates due to changes at the facility or implement improvements that have been released.  Improvements could include a new type respirator the employee can utilize that has better performance for the role.
