There are quite a number reasons for people to hire a skip, you may be working on a larger than usual DIY project and want all of your waste to be removed in one go or your may simply be having a clear out of your loft, house, garage, shed or garden, for whatever reason you should always try to use registered skip or waste disposal company so that you know that your waste is being disposed of properly and not fly tipped in some other out of town area or worse.
Waste disposal and recycling is big business these days, so is the supply of residential and commercial skips and mini skips, and any business sector that is doing well is usually the target of unscrupulous teams of conmen out to make quick money at the expense of others, so beware of these conmen with their low cost skip rental offers, usually found as one line advertisements in the local press or on cards in shop windows, at the very least they will no doubt be ‘fly tipping’ your waste and worst case scenario is that the skip they bring is one of the many hundreds of skips stolen each year, stolen to facilitate this scam.
So how do you go about finding a reliable, trustworthy and honest skip company? Well, it’s the 21st Century so use the internet like you’re doing now, because even skip companies have websites nowadays, the honest one’s do anyway, once on their website look for customer testimonials and reviews and a landline telephone number to start off with, as conmen always operate from a mobile only, plus, check whether they offer a selection of different skip sizes and types rather that just one and check their website for some kind of registration number.
So you have found a company that seems like it is legitimate and has passed all of your tests, you have contacted them via their landline number and found out which size and style of skip is best for you, the only thing left now is for you to arrange a time to have it dropped off at your property, wrong, you also must decide where to have your skip dropped off, if you have a driveway and that is where it is going then fine, but if you do not have a driveway and the skip is to be left on a public road then you will need permission from your local council in the form of a special permit, now many skip companies will ask whether the skip is being left on a public road and arrange a permit on your behalf but don’t presume this, ask and make sure that they have arranged this for you. Now these days the content of skips usually goes to a recycling plant so certain items are no longer allowed to be put in a skip, these items are normally paint tins, car and bike tyres, gas bottles, fridge freezers and television sets, these items must either be taken by you to a recycling station or you must arrange collection though your local council to have them disposed of properly.
The overfilling of skips is also a major problem and if your skip is overfilled the skip company may refuse to take it away until you have removed some of the items, thus charging you for an additional day, as they usually won’t wait around while you do this, a skip must not be filled higher than the vertical sides, keep you waste under this height and the skip driver will be able to secure it properly, thus eliminate the risk of any debris falling off during transit from your premises to the recycling plant.
