How to Get Employees To Do What You Want!

Employees can make or break your business! Here are some tips to help you get them to do what you need and want them to do.

Did you know that your business is only as good as the people who work for it?  To the customer, the employee is the business.  So how the employee acts can make or break your business.

There is an old joke that goes, “How many people work for you?”  The answer is, “Half”.  Seriously, how much work do you get from your employees?  Do they do just enough to keep from being fired? Do you pay them just enough so they won’t quit?  Do you feel they are disengaged, and just don’t get it?

Are your employees doing what you want them to do?  Do your employees know what you want them to do?  Do you know what you want your employees to do? Did you hire someone, perhaps a relative, and then design a job around them, and now they are moving on and you are going to lose their idiosyncrasies?   “Egads”, you say, as you pull your hair out, and rub your upset tummy.  Is there a better way?  How can you get your employees fully engaged to become worker bees and produce the desired results?

Step one:  Consider that no one is a mind reader.  While you might have grand designs in your head, unless they are communicated effectively, no one will know what you want or be able to buy into your desires. The first thing to do is to define, in writing, the jobs that need to be done.  Start with a job title; then write the job functions that the person in this position is expected to do.

Step Two:  Focus on the business processes that need to be done and then systematize them.  There are many processes in a business. They can include such things as the sales process, manufacturing process, design process, collection process, advertising process, appointment process, and so on.   Again, define these in writing.  Then, develop a written system, step by step, for accomplishing each process.  This will allow you to hire someone who can, and will follow directions, and by following the process directions, can successfully achieve the desired results.

If employees are getting results, and being appropriately rewarded for doing so, they should be motivated to continue doing “what you want”.  Not only that, if they are doing a good job, they will like what they are doing.  And if they like what they are doing, they will do a good job.

In summary, you can only get employees to do what you want them to do, by letting them know what and how you would like it done, and then rewarding them for achieving the desired results.  When this happens, you can quit the antacids and let your hair grow back inFree Web Content, and be able to enjoy your business once again.
