CMMI Levels are achieved on the basis of the Staged and Continuous Representation through Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvements (SCAMPI). The SCAMPI is designed by CMMI institute to have a uniform set of methodologies for conducting appraisals relative to CMMI models. The SCAMPI methods satisfy all the appraisal requirements for CMMI (ARC) for Class A, B or C appraisal methods.

SCAMPI A appraisal sponsors are encouraged to consider Class B and C methods,How to Get The CMMI Level 3/5 for an Organization Articles which can produce the similar acceptable results where ratings are not required, with less cost and resources.Key differentiates attributes of the appraisal classes are as follows:   • The degree of confidence in the appraisal outcomes   • The generation of ratings    •Appraisal cost and durationThe SCAMPI A is appropriate for generating ratings to compare maturity or capability levels across organizations. This Class A appraisal is performed when the sponsor wants to compare the organization’s process improvement achievements with other organizations in their domain. Organizational maturity level or capability level ratings are valid for 3 years resulting from a SCAMPI A.The SCAMPI B complies to the subset of ARC requirements. Several requirements of Class A appraisal are optional in Class B. The two types of objective evidences are required for both Class A and B Appraisal. The SCAMPI B doesn’t produce ratings. This type of appraisal method is useful for initial assessments in organization that have just started to use the CMMI models for process improvements. They are cost effective mechanism for interim assessment or capability evaluation. The SCAMPI C method complies to the subset of ARC requirements for the Class B method. Only one of the two types of evidences is required as compared to SCAMPI A and B methods. The Class C method doesn’t produce any ratings. This method is suggested to be used for a readiness or self assessment by projects and organization’s support groups. CMMI supports two improvement paths using levels which are as follows:1.Staged Representation uses Maturity CMMI Levels Certification to measure process improvements.    a.Maturity Level apply to an organization’s overall Maturity    b.Pre-Defined set of process areas (PA) define an improvement path for the organization2.Continuous Representation uses Capability Levels to measure process improvements   a.Capability Level apply to an organization’s process improvement    b.The improvements are characterized relative to an individual PACapability Levels:   1. Capability Level 0: Incomplete         a.Work is not performed or is incomplete         b.Process is unpredictable and poorly controlled    2. Capability Level 1: Performed         a.Work is performed         b.Performance is department or individual practitioner   3.  Capability Level 2: Managed        a.Work is performed         b.Performance is department or individual practitioner    4.Capability Level 3: Defined       a.Process is planned       b.Process Performance is managed against plan       c.Corrective Action are taken when necessary      d.Process is Institutionalized for consistent performance      e.Process is retained during times of stressMaturity Levels:    1.Maturity Level 1: Initial       a.Work is not performed or is incomplete       b.Process is unpredictable and poorly controlled     2. Maturity Level 2: Managed       a.Process is planned       b.Process Performance is managed against plan       c.Corrective Action are taken when necessary       d.Process is Institutionalized for consistent performance       e.Process is retained during times of stress    3.Maturity Level 3: Defined       a.  Project’s process is tailored from organization’s standard process       b.  Process is Qualitatively understood       c.   Process contributes to organization’s assets   4.  Maturity Level 4: Quantitatively Managed      a.Process performance is measured      b.Process is stable      c.Causes of special variations are addressed 5. Maturity Level 4: Optimizing     a.Defects are prevented     b.Improvement are proactive     c. Innovations are interested and deployed     d.Changes is expected, not feared.
