Many charity events require a great deal of start up costs just to get it off the ground. The most desirable fundraising for non profit organizations is one that requires little or no startup costs and the main investment is time. Hosting a charity walkathon requires almost no startup costs and the only investment is time. When hosting a charity walk, the main ingredient of success is finding volunteers. Volunteers to setup, volunteers to sponsor, and volunteers to walk in the fundraising event.

The idea behind a charity walkathon is simple. Volunteers will donate their time and walk or run the charity course. For each mile walked or course completion, sponsors will donate to the charity. Charity walks are a great way to bring attention to your fundraising event and organization’s cause. It’s rather easy to appeal to local television stations and newspapers. Before you kick off the walkathon be sure to have a huge introduction ceremony where the local media is present. Use this as a great way to promote your charity and their cause.

Fundraising can take place on more than just the walking course. Be sure to setup refreshment stands for supporters and onlookers. Selling drinks, snacks, and even apparel to support the charity walk. Publish some sort of pamphlet before the walk commences to get people excited. Enter information about the event, volunteers, and sponsors. Have local businesses sponsor this book with donations and place their information in each one. Also look for corporate sponsors. Look for either one main sponsor or find a group of multiple sponsors to run the event.

The key to a successful charity walk is publicity to help find sponsors, volunteers, people to walk. Send out press releases to the local media as well as placing flyers across town. If possible find a local celebrity to help endorse your charity fundraiser. This will hype up the event even more, bringing in a great deal funds for your organization.
