Do you know what type of home that you want? You should have this question answered before you proceed to actually choosing  builder.  Different homebuilders specialize in different types of homes.

So do you want a single family home, townhouse, or condo. After you have made this selection then you need to decide if you would like your own custom home or one that has already been designed. A custom home is tailored to the needs and wants of a family. Its usually built on a larger piece o land with its own features and amenities.  Usually these are higher end homes and the builder will not build many of these homes per year because the projects do take a considerable amount of time.

The other spectrum will include production homes.  These builders construct a large amount of homes. They buy the land and then they build spec homes. Sometimes the buyer can select his or her own floor-plan. Other times they select from a home already constructed.

Production type builders build homes in all price ranges.

Credentials To Check

Here are some items you should check into:

Find a builder that has many models that they have constructed. 

Check the BBB rating of the builder. You don’t want to select a builder that has unresolved complaints.

Are they members of any credible associations. Maybe the builder has received some awards

Check to see if the builder has been in any lawsuits. This is very important. Also how long has the builder been in business.
