Is Now a Good Time for Women in Small Business?

Economists will tell you that one in three small businesses are out of business within the first three years and if that frightens you, then you might not have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. But, if you see that as a challenge, and something you want to take on, then you probably already know that you have what it takes to start your own company.

Whether you are working out of the home, working as a freelancer, or starting up a store of some kind, the opportunities are out there right now, in spite of the economy. If you read the Wall Street Journal, you will see that people aren’t spending money, but they are on some things and if you are going into business for yourself, then you better make sure you are in the right sector for today’s economy.

But now for the good news – women in small business for themselves make much more than women who work for other people. They tend to be a lot happier with their life, they are fulfilled by their career, and they also spend more time with their family. You have to be able to handle a certain amount of risk, but the payoffs are huge.

The real key to succeeding in your own business is to find something that you love, something that you would enjoy doing even if you weren’t paid for it, and something that people will want.

Many women in small business who started several decades ago are now huge – Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart – and that is because they were not afraid to take risks when everyone else told them what they were doing was foolish. If you feel the need to start up something on your own, then follow their lead and believe in yourself.
