What is Liposuction?
Liposuction is sometimes referred to as "fat modeling." It is suction assisted fat removal. Common areas for this procedure include: abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and neck. There is a limit to the amount of fat that can be removed. This will have much to do with your body type and weight.

How Much Fat?
There are reports of as much as 50 pounds of fat being removed. But it is actually more the 'contouring' effects of liposuction that cause the appearance of dramatic weight loss.

Who Discovered This?
Europe is credited with originating the practice of liposuction. Surgeons were experimenting with the procedure back in the 1960's. French surgeon, Dr. Yves-Gerard Illouz, is given credit for the modern practice of liposuction. In 1982 he invented the "Illouz Method" that involved infusing fluid into the tissues.

Not Just for Women Anymore
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons cosmetic surgery for men is up! Once the term 'liposuction' was only tied to women. Common liposuction surgeries for women included:

- Abdomen
- Thighs
- Arm (underarm fat)
- Breast (reduction)

Typical Liposuction for Men
Baby boomers are driving the demand for plastic surgery as they attempt to live longer and healthier lives. Men are scheduling liposuction procedures for:

- Abdomen
- Neck fat
- Chest fat

Are Men Paying More?
There is some research that indicates that male patients are being charged more for liposuction surgery. Doctors claim that it is due to the skin tissue differences between men and women.

The Problems That Can Occur
Some of the side effects of liposuction surgery are common and should almost be expected. They include:

- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Infection
- Nerve damage

Are You Considering Liposuction?
Yes, our society is always looking for a 'quick fix' to any problem. But it is highly recommended that you seriously consider diet and exercise before entering into a liposuction procedure.

In general you should be in good health and not have a history of diseases that could negatively impact the procedure. Some of these diseases include:

- heart disease
- Diabetes
- Circulation problems

If you are thinking about male liposuction the best thing to do is to get at least two opinions from board-certified liposuction surgeons. ObviouslyScience Articles, there is a ton of information online. But nothing will beat a live consultation.
