Networking has always been important,Networking is Key to Professional and Personal Success Articles but in today’s economy where uncertainty is a fact of life, it is critical. For new graduates just entering the business world, building a network can seem like a daunting task, but you can start with small steps that will lead to greater rewards down the road, both professionally and personally.

The first place to build a network, of course, is your new company. When you are starting out at a company, you will not only be learning a new job, you will be getting to know your co-workers. Depending on the company, your co-workers may be a few people, or a large department. Many may be older than you, or have different interests. It may be tempting to just go to work, and then meet your friends afterwards at your favorite bar. After all, work and personal life are completely separate, right? Well, not totally. While your co-workers may not become your best friends, you need to invest some time in getting to know them. If they go to lunch as a group, make it a point to join them at least occasionally. If they hang out after work once in a while, make it a point to at least stop by and put in an appearance. It is an important way to show you are a team player, and also helps in developing those relationships that can be critical when you need support or advice, or the inside scoop on what’s going on in the company.

You also need to look outside your organization to network, especially if you work at a small company, or if your department consists of only you. You want to meet others in your field and keep up with new trends. One of the best ways to do this is to join a professional organization. Every field has some kind of organization or society, and many have more than one. Search online to find the local chapter and attend their next event. Many have happy hour networking events that combine socializing with a guest speaker or discussion on what’s going on in your field. Not only will you be meeting your fellow professionals and staying on top of what’s new in your industry, you may also make some good friends.

Building a network takes time and effort, but it can reap many benefits down the road. In today’s marketplace, most people don’t work at the same company their whole careers. Layoffs and frequent job changes are a fact of life, so having a network of fellow professionals can be critical in finding a new job or seeking advancement. If you are younger, your network can mentor you, and share their experience and knowledge in your field. You, in turn, bring a fresh perspective and energy. Over time, this network can grow into a true group of respected colleagues and friends who will be by your side through the ups and downs of your career and life.
