In August of 2011, the London riots caused serious damage to shops and businesses in the UK’s capital, before spreading throughout many other UK cities. Thousands of people were involved in the looting and arson, and unfortunately the mass deployment of police resulted in the death of five people.

The following cities were affected by riots which were described as ‘copycat violence’;

 

The BRC (British Retail Consortium) warned that businesses that were affected by the riots would face “huge costs”. Many business owners were highly concerned for their businesses, as well as their own safety.

"It is not safe for shops. A lot of places have been burned down, we have no boards or shutters so we are worried about what could happen."

"No customers will come later anyway, they are frightened. The rioters will smash things and take things and the police won't stop them."

Once the BRC had a better understanding of the cost of damage to UK businesses, they said;

"It is clear that the cost of the damage is going to run into the tens of millions of pounds at least in terms of property damage, goods stolen and loss of business…

"Undoubtedly there will be retailers for whom this will be the final horrendous straw and it won't be viable for them to reopen."

 

The estimated loss to retailers was at least 30,000 trading hours.

The Financial Times reported that 48,000 local businesses had suffered financial losses as a result of the looting and rioting, including;

  • Restaurants
  • Pubs
  • Clubs

Many big businesses were affected by the wave of riots, including;

  • Tesco
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Argos
  • JD Sports
  • Greggs
  • Debenhams
