Over-Buying Dollar Merchandise can Impact Dollar Store Profits

In order to build a successful dollar store, you will first need to choose the right type of products to sell.  People will not contribute to your dollar store profits if you do not provide them with products they actually want and need.

Everyone who starts a dollar store wants it to be successful, right?  In order to build a successful dollar store, you will first need to choose the right type of products to sell.  People will not contribute to your dollar store profits if you do not provide them with products they actually want and need.

Having the right type of products is important for dollar store profits, but so is achieving a balance in your level of inventory.  In fact, buying too much dollar merchandise can impact your profits, and not in a good way.

There are various factors that come into play when trying to decide how much dollar merchandise to buy.  The size of your store is one of the most important factors.  However, your store’s particular sales activity is important too.

Everything sells differently.  With core consumables and other popular items, you will definitely want to have plenty on hand.  This is not the case for many other types of products though.  “Slow-sellers”are products that do not move as quickly, so you will want to avoid over-buying this type of dollar merchandise.

Sometimes, you will come across a great deal on items even if they are slow-sellers.  Do not be tempted to over-buy merchandise just because you are saving money on it.  It may take too long to recoup your investment with these products.  Focus on higher-selling departments if you want to improve your profits.

Unknown products are always hitting the market.  Some of them will turn out to be quite popular, so it can be a good idea to give them a test run in your store to see if they contribute to your profit.  However, you will want to avoid over-buying this type of merchandise too.  You do not know how well unknown items will sell, or if they will sell at all.  If things do not go as expected, you would definitely regret over-buying.

One of your main goals should be to keep an empty stock room.  This does not mean run out of merchandise on the shelves and simply wait for a replenishment order to arrive.  You will definitely need to have merchandise in storage, but it should get put out on the shelves rather quickly.

There are many things that can impact dollar store profits and many of these factors will largely be out of your control.  However the quantity you stock is something in your control, so in order to avoid negatively impacting your profits it is best to avoid over-buying merchandise.
