By its inherent nature, polyethylene is found to be highly reactive to ultraviolet light. It means that an untreated sheet of polyethylene left in the sun would rapidly break down, possibly completely disintegrating within a couple of months. This is the main reason why most greenhouses with polyethylene covers are treated to make them UV-resistant.
