If you have bad credit, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you won’t be able to find your ideal apartment for rent. Of course having an impeccable credit score will allow you to become approved immediately and without question in many cases. Most landlords will want to run a background check on you. Don’t take it too personally. They have to make sure the tenants who live on the premises will pay their bills and don’t have a criminal background.

Many renters fret that they have a poor credit score. Don’t worry to much about what your score is. Most properties don’t have a minimum acceptance score. They will base their decision on other items. as well. They will look at your past rental history. Did you pay your rent on time? Did you leave without fulfilling the terms of your lease? This will affect their final decision.

If you feel that your credit history may come to harm you, you can check your credit history with the 3 major credit bureaus. They are Experian , TransUnion, and Equifax.  If there are any discrepancies you may check them here. Many times there will be items on some reports that are not on others.

If you do have issues with your credit and past rental history, you can also look for apartment housing that does not require a background check. You may have to pay more of a deposit though. Many times private owners and smaller communities will be more lax when it comes to this. Also in times of increased competition and higher vacancies, credit checks may not be required.

Many times future landlords will take a letter of recommendation from your previous landlords. This can be extremely helpful. If demonstrates that you are a good tenant and you pay your rent on time.

Remember if you credit is run too many times this can actually lower your credit score. This can add up. So make your decisions accordingly.
